They gutted the VRA. They will redraw the maps. Here’s how we win anyway.

If you spent any time looking at the primary returns on Tuesday night, you still might be feeling a mix of things today. Anxiety. Frustration. Maybe even a little anger. 

Or maybe even a little… hope.

We are living through a high-stakes political moment. The Supreme Court's decision to weaken the Voting Rights Act opened the floodgates for gerrymandering across the South. Governor Kemp is already calling a special session to redraw Georgia’s maps behind closed doors. It is easy to look at those headlines and feel overwhelmed. 

But we keep seeing hope.

On Tuesday, Georgians in our Battleground State House Districts sent a message. While all five of our candidates cleared the primary, we wanted to highlight our two candidates who had contested primaries.

Michelle Kang won in HD-99 with 71.5%, while Beth Fuller won in HD-53 with 80% of the vote. Both are headed to November with a mandate from Democratic primary voters who looked at two candidates willing to do the hard work of knocking doors, showing up, and making the case—and said yes, unambiguously.

Our organization exists because we refuse to let anxiety dictate the future of our state. We choose to build hope instead.

Hope is 15 students (and counting!) joining us as interns since the VRA was gutted.

Hope is over a million Democrats stepping up to vote because Georgia – and the South – is worth fighting for.

Hope is you, reading this email, and saying, “Damn right, we’re fighting back.”

The primary is behind us. Our candidates are locked in. The path to breaking the gerrymandered stranglehold on Georgia runs through flipping the State House.
