Thanksgiving in the Peach State: Democracy Delivers!

🍑 This Week in Georgia:

  1. Early voting has started for State House 121. Early voting is now underway for the December 9 special election in Georgia House District 121, which covers parts of Clarke and Oconee Counties. Mack “Dutch” Guest IV (R) and Eric Gisler (D) are the two candidates on the ballot. Turnout is expected to hinge heavily on early vote participation, with both campaigns working to introduce themselves to voters in a compressed timeline. You can read more about the special election here:

  2. Gwinnett County Runoff Election Dec 2. Two democratic candidates enter a runoff for State House 106 after “neither managed to clinch over half of the vote in a three-way race”. This ensures the seat will go to a Democrat. The two candidates are: Marqus Cole (D) and Muhammad Akbar Ali (D). Cole emphasizes affordable housing, universal healthcare access, and improving public schools, while Ali emphasizes progressive priorities like immigrant and LGBTQ rights, public school investment, and reducing living costs.

The Epstein Files Are Coming—But Will We Ever See the Truth?

Last week, after Democrats of the House Oversight Committee released three emails from convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein that mention President Trump, Republicans responded by releasing a 20,000 page document of emails in some twisted “gotcha.”

Numerous emails show Epstein lamenting over President Trump, referencing the crude behavior and alleged victimization they were both involved in. These emails are neither from nor to President Trump, there is no denying their close interactions.

Surprisingly, Georgia’s Majorie Taylor Green is one of the strongest voices against Trump’s desire to suppress the Epstein files. Ahead of Tuesday's House vote, MTG, Rep. Massie, and Rep. Khanna joined survivors in front of the Capitol. Survivors shared their haunting stories of sex trafficking as minors, and their continued fight for justice.

However, it must be noted that this does not undo the harm MTG has perpetuated in her time of office nor does it show that she has shifted in her campaign messaging. Instead, it shows how Trump has failed to live up to her vision of what the Republican Party should be.

But, on Wednesday, Trump promised to heavily censor the released files. He has made it clear that transparency and honesty are not core values of his administration.

It will be up to the public to decide what to make of these redacted files.

Who Really Wins in Georgia’s Big Tax Cut?

On Monday, November 17, 2025, a Georgia special legislative committee met to examine the GOP’s proposal to eliminate the state income tax—a plan that is poised to become one of the defining issues of the 2026 Governor’s race. Senator Blake Tillery, who chairs the committee, and other members spent the hearing discussing how to replace the roughly $20 billion in annual revenue the income tax generates.

At first glance, eliminating the income tax may sound like a win for Georgia families. But the details tell a very different story. To make up for the $20 billion gap, lawmakers floated alternatives such as tripling the state sales tax from 4% to 12%. With local taxes added in, the average sales tax would rise to about 15.4%. This is despite Georgia already having the seventh-lowest overall tax burden in the nation (Kanso, 2017).

The committee also discussed eliminating tax credits and exemptions that families depend on. Under the GOP proposal, the top 5% of earners would see the biggest benefit, while households making under $63,000 a year would face the steepest tax increase, as shown in the chart below.

Most Georgia families cannot absorb these higher costs. The ripple effects would expose schools, healthcare, and basic services to deep cuts—all to finance a tax plan that shifts the burden downward while offering the largest gains to those at the top. As the 2026 Governor’s race unfolds, the debate is no longer abstract: Georgia does not need to eliminate its income tax, and the consequences of doing so would fall hardest on the families least able to afford it.

Grateful for the Georgia We’re Building Together

As we head into Thanksgiving, the 2030 Project wanted to take a moment to celebrate the people and organizations across Georgia who make our democracy stronger every day. We’re especially grateful for the Young Democrats of Georgia and the UGA Young Democrats, whose passion, organizing power, and willingness to show up on campuses, in communities, and at doors continue to shape a new generation of leadership.

We’re also thankful for the public servants who work tirelessly for our state—from statewide leaders like Senators Warnock and Ossoff to local champions who remind us what steady leadership looks like. We appreciate the Democratic Party of Georgia for building durable, statewide organizing networks and supporting public servants at every level. And we’re grateful for grassroots groups, from Indivisible Metro Atlanta to Indivisible GA-04, whose year-round organizing keeps our democracy moving.

To every volunteer and believer who has simply held onto the idea that change is possible—thank you. This movement belongs to all of us.

This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for each other. We’re grateful for the Georgia we’re building together. Every door knocked, every call made, every conversation started—it all adds up to change. We’re heading into the next chapter of this fight with gratitude and determination. Together, we’re building a better Georgia.

Until next time,

Fund year-round organizing. Flip the GA State Legislature.
