Harris Campaign Update: Georgia Rally and VP Pick

The 2030 Project witnessed the electric atmosphere at Vice President Harris’ rally at Georgia State. Georgia Democrats were unified behind our historic presidential candidate.

Less than a week after this rally and building off her campaign’s incredible momentum, Vice President Kamala Harris announced her running mate on Tuesday: Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota.

In our last newsletter, we conducted a poll asking for your guesses on who the Vice President's pick might be. Pete Buttigieg came first, followed by Mark Kelly, Josh Shapiro, Andy Beshear, and Roy Cooper. Notably, Walz only became a prominent name in the discussions just last week.

Walz has a diverse background, including service in the Army National Guard, a 20-year career as an educator, and six terms in the US House of Representatives. His political career is marked by a solid commitment to protecting abortion rights, expanding free school lunches, securing paid family leave, advancing LGBTQ+ rights, and enacting gun safety legislation.

The 2030 Project are fully committed to supporting the Harris-Walz campaign in every way possible. As Vice President Harris emphasized during her July 30th rally in Atlanta, "The road to the White House runs through Georgia." Our state played a crucial role in the 2020 and 2022 election cycles, proving its significance as a swing state. We are confident that Georgia can deliver once again in 2024.

To help the Harris-Walz administration achieve its goals, it's crucial to support Democrats across all levels of government. This means not only voting for the presidential ticket but also focusing on down-ballot races, including state and local positions.

Flipping the Georgia legislature is a pivotal step in this process. By electing Democrats to the Georgia legislature, we ensure there is a supportive legislative body working in tandem with the federal administration to bring the meaningful changes Georgians want and deserve.

Break Down: Project 2025 v. Agenda 47

Project 2025 walked so Agenda 47 could run. Recently, Trump has introduced a rebranded version of Project 2025 called Agenda 47—a document based on the same radical ideology just with less policy language. This latest move is a result of the remarkable unpopularity of Project 2025.

Reproductive Rights

Project 2025 proposes specific changes to abortion and family policies rather than a pointed nationwide ban. It includes withdrawing the abortion pill mifepristone from the market and restricting its mail distribution. Under a new "Department for Life," it would:

  • Track pregnancies, eliminate sex education, and replace birth control programs with "fertility awareness" and marriage promotion.

  • Allow employers to opt out of covering birth control and permit healthcare providers to refuse to dispense medications based on moral objections.

  • Redirect childcare funds to encourage women to stay at home.

Surely enough, the harshness of this proposition will energize Democratic voters concerned about the dismantling of reproductive rights and the push for restrictive conservative family values, potentially improving Democratic chances in the 2024 election. The more Project 2025 is tied to former President Trump, the better the odds for Kamala Harris come fall.

Agenda 47 advocates for a decentralized approach to abortion, leaving lawmaking to the states. It includes a ban on late-term abortions without specifying details and aims to protect access to prenatal care, birth control, and in-vitro fertilization. However, it does not address the issue of mifepristone. While this "less aggressive" stance may not drum up as much Democratic opposition, a return to a Trump presidency would usher in a darker administration than his first. The former president is known for his false promises, with women often being his primary targets.

There is no question that the most important issue this election is reproductive freedom—bottom line: Project 2025 and Agenda 47 plan to continue to take it away. The Harris-Walz ticket is built on FREEDOM, and The 2030 Project has no doubt this historic, female-led administration will be the one to codify reproductive rights.

The Economy

The next threat from Project 2025 and Agenda 47 lies in their economic policies. While Trump promises to "defeat" inflation and "quickly bring down all prices," his proposed policies will likely have the opposite effect—raising the cost of living and potentially triggering a recession.

Trump has proposed a sweeping expansion of his already disastrous tax cuts, which would add another $5 trillion to the United States' staggering debt. While much of the existing debt funds popular programs like Social Security, this additional $5 trillion would primarily benefit the wealthy, further widening economic inequality.

According to the Senate Joint Economic Committee's analysis of Project 2025, a family of four earning $90,000 would have to pay over $2,000 more in taxes and over $6,000 more if the Child Tax Credit were eliminated. But that doesn't mean millionaires would suffer—they would be paying a lower top tax rate. Moreover, this plan would lower corporate tax rates from 21% to 18%, adding $1.3 trillion to the national deficit in 2017. On the other hand, Democrats advocated for a 28% corporate tax rate to fund programs bolstering the middle class and targeting deficit reduction.

According to the Senate Joint Economic Committee's analysis of Project 2025, a family of four earning $90,000 would face over $2,000 in additional taxes and more than $6,000 if the Child Tax Credit were eliminated. Meanwhile, millionaires would benefit from a lower top tax rate. The plan also proposes reducing corporate tax rates from 21% to 18%, which contributed $1.3 trillion to the national deficit in 2017. Democrats, however, advocated for a 28% corporate tax rate to fund programs bolstering the middle class and targeting deficit reduction.

Agenda 47 doesn't only double down on Republican determination to enact tax cuts; it reaffirms Republicans' commitment against human rights, especially those of migrant workers. According to the Peterson Institute of International Economics, deporting 1.3 million migrant workers would cause the US economy to shrink by 2.1%, creating a recession. Mass deportations would also plunge millions of mixed-status US families into poverty, reducing their median household income by 47% from $41,300 to $22,000. This means that the 1.2 million mortgages held by households with undocumented immigrants would be in peril, putting the United States at risk for a repeat of 2008.

The final part of Trump's sweeping plan for the economy is his foreign policy, namely his tariffs against China. When tariffs raise costs, those costs are passed onto consumers. This will be the case for Trump's tenfold tariff increase against China. His proposal to tariff $3 trillion of imports would cost the average household $1,700 more a year by making it more expensive to import raw materials. Households already struggling with living costs will be forced to shoulder the burden of reckless, uninformed economic policies that are making it easier for millionaires to play golf on the middle-class' dime.

Contrasting Trump's promise of a future recession, the Biden-Harris Administration consistently delivered strong economic growth. With an economic policy centered on empathy for the everyday American, a Harris-Walz administration will address the financial challenges faced by the working class.

Democracy

There is no greater threat to democracy than Project 2025, Agenda 47, and Trump’s campaign. All of these plans hinge directly on a single executive order known as Schedule F. The order would massively expand presidential power and change the fundamental dynamics of the federal government.

Schedule F is an executive order that former president Trump issued in October of 2020, before he lost the 2020 election. The order removes employment protections that prevent career government employees from being replaced on the basis of political ideology. President Biden rescinded this order, but it is undoubtedly something that Trump would be ready to reissue if he were to take the presidency again. Schedule F, if reinstated, would allow the president to be free to fire dedicated civil servants and replace them with loyalists and ideologues that align with Trump’s campaign and policies.

By politicizing civil servants, Schedule F could create endless opportunities for corruption and make independent agencies such as the Department of Justice virtually useless because of the lack of forcible accountability for Trump’s administration. Agencies that are obligated to tell the truth to the American people could also be incentivized to suppress facts and spread misinformation in favor of the partisan they were hired to serve. All of these threats would also further distrust in the government, causing democratic backsliding and further polarization and mistrust among the American people.

This obscure order sets up the Heritage Foundation’s initiative to install as many as 50,000 conservative movement activists in the government. Unsurprisingly, Schedule F’s reinstatement is noted as the first step of Trump’s campaign platform, Agenda 47. This entanglement, as harmful as it is, directly proves that Trump’s agenda and campaign is directly tied to project 2025 despite how much he attempts to distance himself from the unpopular and threatening plan.
