A Time for Thanks, a Future for Action

Happy Thanksgiving from The 2030 Project! 🦃

We’re Thankful For…

As we approach a year and a half of The 2030 Project, we want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude. We are most thankful for you—our dedicated supporters—whose commitment and passion drive us forward. Together, we are working toward our goal of flipping the state legislature blue and making lasting change in Georgia.

Hope is on the Horizon

When a political party suffers a crushing loss, it engages in self-reflection, innovates, and comes back even stronger than before. In 2008, Barack Obama won the Electoral College 365-173, the popular vote by 10 million. Democrats picked up 21 seats in the House (widening their majority to 257 to 178) while adding 6 Senate seats, expanding their majority to 59-41.

Now that was a sweeping mandate.

This is not to understate the harm a second Trump Presidency will bring to this country and its people. These next four years will likely be some of the darkest in America’s history. But as the great Mark Twain once said, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.”

Democrats have a blueprint for the 2026 midterms. They need only to look… across the aisle.

Republicans roared back in the 2010 midterms, fueled by voter dissatisfaction with the economy (sound familiar?), opposition to Obama’s policies like the Affordable Care Act, and support from the Tea Party movement. They gained 63 House seats, 6 Senate seats, and won the national popular vote for the House of Representatives by 6.8 points, presenting the victory as a referendum on Democratic governance and Obama's progressive agenda.

Given the narrow margin of Trump’s victory (1.6 %, or 2.5 million) and narrow Republican majorities in Congress, Democrats need to fight like hell to protect the people in this country, then roar back to power themselves in 2026, running as a referendum on Republican governance, which is already setting up to be a disaster, based on Trump’s initial cabinet picks, and his commitment to the woefully unpopular Project 2025.

(Note: this is all based on having free and fair elections in 2026, certainly not a given)

To win in 2026, Democrats must energize their base, focus on economic issues, and highlight Republican overreach following their 2024 victory.

Under the leadership of a new DNC Chair, Democrats must build a year-round messaging ecosystem that embraces social media and meets voters where they’re at on the economy, healthcare, education, immigration, and more. A strong turnout strategy, especially among young and minority voters, can not only win back majorities in the House and Senate, but can also thwart the last two years of a second Trump Presidency, while laying out a hopeful vision that moves this country forward.

If that little trip down history lane doesn’t get you fired up, here’s this magnificent thread from our friend David Pepper, former Chair of the Ohio Democratic Party.

The Upcoming Georgia Legislative Session

The 2025 Georgia legislative session will kick off on Monday, January 13, with renewed Democratic momentum. A net gain of two Democratic representatives in the House brings their total to 80 seats, marking a step closer to the majority. Additionally, several newly elected Democrats are replacing incumbents, bringing fresh perspectives to the table.

Democrats are beginning the session with two newly elected leaders at the helm:

  • Representative Carolyn Hugley of Columbus, who has served in the legislature since 1993, is the newly elected House minority leader. Despite recent election losses, Hugley is focused on â€œreconstructing the Democratic agenda” to tackle urgent issues like health care, education, and economic security.

  • Senator Harold Jones of Augusta, who will serve as Senate minority leader, has outlined a bold vision for the session. His top priorities include expanding Medicaid, tackling childcare expenses, and advocating for affordable housing to meet the needs of Georgia families.

The upcoming session provides Democrats with a critical opportunity to advance their priorities and reintroduce bills that failed in previous sessions. From expanding Medicaid to bolstering education funding and addressing voter access, the caucus has a chance to champion policies that directly impact Georgians. Just as important, it’s a chance to hold Republicans accountable and connect with voters seeking a fresh and forward-thinking alternative.

Though the path to a majority is a long-term goal, this session will signify progress in the pursuit of a better Georgia.

With that said, Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Here’s to hope, freedom, and the fire to fight like hell for this country – which is something we all should be grateful for.

Sincerely,
